Profile of student’s quantitative reasoning in solving problems based on the cognitive style field independent and field dependent
Profil penalaran kuantitatif siswa SMP dalam memecahkan masalah ditinjau dari gaya kognitif field independent dan field dependent
Abstrak
This research is qualitative descriptive, which aimed at describing the student’s quantitative reasoning in solving problems based on the cognitive style Field Independent and Field Dependent. Two girls’ students of Ma’arif Junior High School Sukorejo were selected as subjects from the higher rank in the mathematics’ test and represent two types of cognitive style Field Independent and Field Dependent. The chosen students were asked to solve mathematics problems and were interviewed. In general, the results showed there are differences in quantitative reasoning between Field Independent and Field Dependent students. Field independent student presented all information on the problem, while the Field Dependent student only presented some information on the problem and did not present the other information. Field independent student can showed the limitations of mathematical methods in the form of equations that can only use to solve a given problem or a problem that same as a given problem, while Field Dependent student cannot showed the limitations of their mathematical methods. By knowing the different quantitative reasoning and cognitive styles of students, it is hoped that the teacher can provide appropriate learning so that the learning provided is more optimal.
