Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the semiotic of formal operational students with different cognitive styles in linear programming problem solving. The subjects of this study were one student with field-dependent cognitive style (SFD) and one student with field-independent cognitive style (SFI). The research data was collected through the linear programming problem solving assignment and task-based semi structured interview. The analysis process in students’ sheet in linear programming problem solving is based on semiotic indicators namely symbol, code, and meaning and Polya problem solving steps . From the data analysis showed that the semiotic carried out by the formal operational students with different cognitive styles in linear programming problem solving had not yet created meaningful information because the use of symbols, code generation, and meaning making was not done completely.
