Description of junior high school students' mathematical reasoning ability in sequence and series competence

Abstrak
This qualitative descriptive study aims to describe the mathematical reasoning abilities of junior high school students in sequence and series competencies, especially arithmetic. The indicators used consist of four, namely the ability to make conjectures, present mathematical statements orally or in writing, perform mathematical manipulations, and draw conclusions or make generalizations. The research was carried out at SMP Negeri 1 Gambut, with subjects in class VIIIG. Of the 29 existing students, 3 students were selected using purposive sampling each in the categories of high, medium and low score groups. The data collection techniques used were written tests and interviews. To ensure the validity of the data, this research used technical triangulation (tests and interviews) and source triangulation (students and teachers). The results showed that the indicator that appeared the most was the ability to perform mathematical manipulation, while the least appearing was the ability to present mathematical statements orally or in writing. It is suggested that students do not only focus on technical calculation skills but must master in converting word problems into appropriate mathematical statements.
